Prioritizing the Newest Guidelines for Seniors and COVID-19

The health and well-being of our residents are paramount at Pegasus Senior Living. It’s a commitment that we take to heart daily. It’s especially at the forefront of our minds with flu season beginning and the threat of new COVID-19 variants.

According to a recent article, the Biden administration plans to urge all Americans to get a COVID-19 booster shot this autumn to counter a new wave of infections. Our communities will be following the vaccination guidelines for senior citizens and COVID-19.

Our senior living communities take a proactive approach to health and wellness. We want to echo this message and encourage residents and their families to stay vigilant and protect their health. We are committed to health care for seniors.

Understanding New COVID-19 Variants: What They Mean for Older Adults

Recent reports from global health organizations have highlighted the emergence of new COVID-19 variants.

One such variant is BA.2.86, a highly mutated lineage of the virus that distinguishes itself from the currently dominant XBB.1.5 variant with 36 unique alterations.

Despite these mutations, there is currently no evidence to suggest that BA.2.86 spreads faster or causes more severe illness than previous versions of the virus.

However, it’s important to remember that information about this new variant is still coming to light, and we must stay informed and vigilant.

The BA.2.86 variant has been detected in six cases across four countries since late July, including in:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Israel
  • Denmark

While it differs structurally from earlier variants targeted by current vaccines, scientists are working tirelessly to analyze its potential impact on public health.

With the emergence of BA.2.86, the world has seen a rise in infections and hospitalizations due to the EG.5 “Eris” subvariant.

This variant has been responsible for more cases in recent months. Still, it’s reassuring to note that the COVID-19 vaccine continues to defend against illness and death, including against the Eris variant.

This underscores the importance of getting vaccinated and staying up-to-date with recommended booster shots. Updated boosters are currently being developed to target the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.512.

Preliminary trial data suggests promising results from the latest version of the Moderna vaccine against Eris and a related variant called Fornax. Pfizer’s updated COVID-19 shot has also shown neutralizing activity against the Eris subvariant in a study conducted on mice.

Understanding these evolving dynamics of COVID-19 can feel overwhelming for older adults and their families. Our Pegasus Senior Living Health and Wellness team, led by Dr. Sandra Petersen, is committed to staying ahead of these developments and implementing necessary measures to protect our residents.

We encourage everyone to:

  • Follow health guidelines
  • Keep up with vaccinations and boosters as recommended
  • Remain vigilant

Together, we can navigate this complex landscape and continue fostering healthy, vibrant lives in our senior living communities.

Staying Vigilant to Senior COVID-19 Guidelines

COVID-19 has underscored the importance of staying vigilant when it comes to our health. As we navigate a season that now includes three bugs, it’s crucial to remain informed of the latest health advisories and recommendations.

The proposed COVID-19 boosters are designed to enhance the effectiveness of the initial vaccine doses, providing additional protection against emerging virus variants.

Like the annual flu shot, this booster is another tool in our arsenal to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

How Pegasus Communities Can Help

In Pegasus Senior Living communities, we are committed to supporting our residents in maintaining their health. We consistently monitor updates from health authorities and adapt our protocols accordingly to ensure the health and well-being of all community members.

Many of our communities have participated in on-site vaccination programs since 2020.

Our team members work tirelessly to create a nurturing environment that prioritizes the health of residents. From nutritious meal planning to organizing engaging mental and physical activities, we aim to support the overall wellness of our community members.

Are you wondering how to slow Alzheimer’s progression? You’re not alone. This question is on the minds of millions of people in the country:

  • Over six million Americans have Alzheimer’s
  • More than 11 million family members act as caregivers
  • At least 13 million people are a risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 2050

We’re getting closer to answering that question with recent advancements in science.

Data-based memory care communities are one group leading the charge in not letting the symptoms of Alzheimer’s define residents.

Dr. Sandra Petersen created the Connections memory care program. It is a unique approach to dementia care that focuses on connecting with individuals at different levels and utilizing the neuroplastic process to regain memory and skills.

Her signature Connect, Move, Learn sequence is helping residents discover purpose and meaning.

What are Alzheimer’s and dementia?

Alzheimer’s and dementia are terms frequently used interchangeably. However, they have distinct meanings.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. It is a broad category that encompasses a range of medical conditions.

Alzheimer’s is a specific type of dementia. It is a progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys memory and thinking skills, eventually affecting the ability to carry out simple tasks. It’s the most common cause of dementia, representing 60-80% of all dementia cases.

While the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease isn’t fully understood, it’s likely due to a combination of:

  • Genetics
  • Environment
  • Lifestyle factors

Early symptoms typically include:

  • Difficulty remembering new information
  • Confusion
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty speaking or writing

What is Memory Care?

Memory care is a specialized type of senior care tailored for individuals with memory loss. Memory care units provide an environment designed to meet the unique needs of these individuals.

In a memory care facility, residents receive 24-hour supervised care in a separate wing or floor of a residential facility. The team is specially trained in memory care, understanding the challenges faced by those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

These secure communities are designed to help manage the behavioral symptoms of dementia, such as wandering. Moreover, memory care programs often involve various activities intended to stimulate the brain and slow the progression of the disease.

What is Connections?

The Connections memory care program is available in Pegasus Senior Living communities nationwide. We rely on the data from our Senior Vice President of Health and Wellness, Dr. Sandra Peterson.

We are most excited to offer residents the Connect, Move, Learn activity sequence to slow memory loss progression.

Connect

Social connections are vital for mental health. The first step in the program focuses on emotional bonds and relationships. Activities could range from:

  • Spiritual discussions
  • Current events
  • Music appreciation sessions

The objective is to stimulate the brain and create an emotional connection between residents and team members.

The Connections program encourages regular interaction among residents to foster a sense of community and shared experience. Social activities bring joy and stimulate the brain, building resilience against cognitive decline.

Move

The program’s second phase focuses on physical movement, particularly movements that cross the body, which helps with the left-right shift between the brain’s temporal lobes.

Activities can include:

  • Yoga
  • Passing a ball side to side
  • Dancing
  • Balloon volleyball

Regular physical activity benefits the heart, circulation, and mental well-being. Even for people showing signs of dementia, exercise has been found to boost proteins in the brain that may help slow decline.

The Connections program incorporates various physical activities tailored to the abilities and preferences of our residents.

Learn

The human brain is incredibly adaptable. The program’s final phase seeks to engage the logical or left side of the brain. Activities in this phase could include:

  • Math exercises
  • Word finds
  • Puzzles
  • Group reading sessions
  • Art therapy

The goal is to help participants reconnect and express their experiences in the environment. The Connections program offers a range of intellectual pursuits designed to keep the mind sharp and engaged.

Parallel to the Connections program, we also offer specialized programming for all stages of dementia. Each stage requires a unique approach and understanding, and our team is trained to provide the right level of support.

One innovative method we use is the incorporation of Oshibori towels into our routine. These warm, scented towels, commonly used in Japan, are offered to residents before meals. They cleanse the hands, and their warmth and aroma stimulate the senses, promoting appetite and enhancing the dining experience.

This simple ritual can significantly improve nutrition, a crucial aspect of dementia care.

Remember, every small step counts when it comes to brain health. So let’s Connect, Move, and Learn together to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Reducing the Risk of Dementia

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s and most types of dementia. However, research suggests that certain lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk.

Stay Active

Physical activity is one of the top ways to reduce your risk of dementia. Regular exercise not only keeps the body healthy but also helps in slowing cognitive decline. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga class, or a game of tennis, staying active can make a significant difference.

Eat Healthily

A healthy diet is another crucial factor in slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s. The DASH diet emphasizes:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Fat-free or low-fat dairy

The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, has been suggested to reduce cognitive decline.

Limit Alcohol and Quit Smoking

Reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking are crucial steps towards a healthier brain. These habits can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, which has been linked to a higher chance of developing vascular dementia.

Stay Socially Engaged

Social engagement plays a significant role in maintaining mental health. Participating in social activities can build up your brain’s resilience and improve your mood, helping to delay or even prevent dementia.

Mental Stimulation

Keeping your mind active and engaged is another effective way to slow Alzheimer’s progression. This could be through puzzles, reading, writing, or any other activity that challenges the brain.

Get Quality Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for brain health. Poor sleep or sleep disorders can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

While these lifestyle changes can help, it’s also important to manage other health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure. These conditions can accelerate the progression of Alzheimer’s if not well-managed.

Slow Dementia Progression with Connections

We believe in creating an environment that promotes social engagement, physical activity, and mental stimulation. Our team of dedicated professionals is here to support residents and their families on the memory loss journey.

Caring for seniors with dementia requires more than just basic supervision. It involves developing effective communication techniques that foster understanding, connection, and support.

The Connections memory care program is a signature service offered by Pegasus Senior Living communities. It relies on neuroplasticity data developed by Dr. Sandra Petersen. Our dementia care utilizes:

  • The Connect, Move, Learn sequence
  • Intentional programming
  • Evidence-based techniques for communicating with seniors who have dementia

Join us to explore dementia communication techniques beyond the basics. We will delve into the innovative therapies that can enhance the well-being of individuals living with dementia.

Let’s discover how these approaches can make a profound difference in the lives of seniors and their caregivers.

Memory Care Explained

Memory care is a specialized type of senior living for people experiencing cognitive decline. It is provided to individuals with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia.

Trained professionals provide personalized support and assistance to help individuals with memory loss. They create a comfortable and structured environment that considers individuals with memory impairment’s unique needs and challenges.

Memory care involves various aspects, including:

  • Secure entrances, alarms, and surveillance systems to prevent wandering or accidents
  • Personalized care and assistance with activities of daily living
  • Cognitive stimulation through puzzles, memory games, reminiscing activities, and socialization
  • A structured environment to reduce anxiety
  • Emotional support for residents and family members

Memory care can be provided in different settings, including:

  • Specialized memory care communities
  • Assisted living facilities
  • Home care

Dementia Communication and the Connect, Move, Learn Sequence

Our groundbreaking memory care program is focused on neuroplasticity. The Connect, Move, Learn approach aids residents in changing and rewiring their brains through repeated interventional programming.

In the early stages of dementia, the left lobe of the brain responsible for language is often affected. The right lobe follows while accounting for emotions and creativity. Dementia disrupts communication between these two sides. Brain plasticity is how we continue to make connections.

Connect

This stage focuses on engaging emotions. By creating meaningful connections and touching upon feelings, we aim to strengthen neural pathways associated with memory and cognition.

Through personalized activities, interactions, and reminiscing exercises, residents are encouraged to connect with their past experiences. We aim to foster a sense of identity and promote emotional well-being.

Move

Cross-body movement takes center stage in the Move phase.

Physical exercise and activities that involve coordinated movements, such as dance or tai chi, stimulate both sides of the brain. This cross-lateral movement helps promote communication between the left and right lobes, aiding in rewiring.

By engaging in regular exercise, residents:

  • Improve circulation
  • Increase oxygen flow to the brain
  • Enhance overall cognitive function

Learn

After warming up the brain through exercise, the Learn phase involves challenging cognitive activities, including:

  • Puzzles
  • Memory games and trivia
  • Creative pursuits
  • Problem-solving tasks
  • Group projects

By providing opportunities for learning and mental stimulation, residents actively engage their brain’s neural networks, promoting the formation of new connections and reinforcing existing ones.

The Connections Program Explained

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections in response to learning, experience, and environmental changes. It’s one of the ways our team members improve the daily life of people with dementia.

Dr. Petersen explains the power of song in the video above. When we engage in music, various regions of our brain are activated.

Here’s how singing can facilitate communication and promote neuroplasticity:

  • Singing often involves repetition, rhythm, and melody, aiding in memory retrieval.
  • Songs evoke emotions and can create a positive and enjoyable learning experience.
  • Music engages multiple senses simultaneously.
  • Singing and dancing require the coordination of various brain regions. These are responsible for language processing, auditory perception, motor control, and emotional processing.

A diagnosis of dementia can be crushing to a person’s sense of independence. As Executive Director Arlene Hsu explains, “This is their space, and this is their time to have their own apartment.”

Connections offers a comprehensive program that gives residents autonomy and purpose through data-based therapies.

Intentional Programming Guides Every Aspect of Dementia Care

Intentional programming in memory care involves carefully planned:

  • Activities
  • Personalized interventions
  • Environment

The symptoms of dementia can alter a person’s perception. Carefully choosing an engaging activity is just as important as a room’s type of lighting or scent.

Our activities are purposefully structured and implemented to promote personalized cognitive stimulation and engagement.

By focusing on meaningful and personalized activities, intentional programming helps individuals maintain their cognitive abilities and improve their quality of life.

Four Advanced Dementia Communication Techniques

1. Person-Centered Approach

The person-centered approach places the individual with dementia at the heart of communication. It involves:

  • Active listening
  • Empathy
  • Eye contact
  • Understanding body language and facial expressions
  • Understanding unique needs and preferences
  • Living in the reality of a person diagnosed with dementia

Caregivers can create a trusting environment by adapting to their communication style and focusing on their emotions and experiences.

2. Validation Therapy

Validation therapy aims to validate the emotions and realities experienced by individuals with dementia. Rather than correcting or challenging their perceptions, caregivers provide empathy and understanding.

This technique helps:

  • Reduce distress
  • Promote a sense of dignity
  • Strengthen the bond between seniors and their caregivers

3. Reminiscence and Recall Therapy

Reminiscence therapy encourages individuals with dementia to recall and share memories from their past.

By engaging in conversations about their life experiences, caregivers can:

  • Promote cognitive stimulation
  • Boost self-esteem
  • Encourage social interaction

This technique helps maintain a sense of identity and provides opportunities for meaningful connections.

4. Multisensory Stimulation

Communicate with a person with dementia without speaking. Using a combination of sensory stimuli, such as:

  • Touch: a gentle hand massage
  • Sight: pictures and videos
  • Sound: favorite songs or soothing background noise
  • Smell: fresh baked goods or a partner’s perfume

Music therapy, aromatherapy, and tactile objects can trigger positive memories, evoke emotions, and create a sensory-rich environment that enhances communication and overall well-being.

At-Home Dementia Therapies

When providing dementia support as a family caregiver, our best tools are activity and socialization.

Various medications, such as cholinesterase inhibitors, attempt to slow progression and alleviate cognitive and behavioral symptoms to some extent. However, consult medical professionals to understand the potential benefits and side effects.

Alternative non-pharmacological interventions are also beneficial. Some include:

  • Music therapy
  • Art therapy
  • Dance therapy
  • Pet therapy

Engaging in activities and spending time with others can help slow down memory loss. Intentional programming gives loved ones a sense of purpose.

By staying active and participating in meaningful tasks, individuals with dementia can stimulate their brains and maintain cognitive function for longer periods. Social interaction provides:

  • Emotional support
  • Reduces feelings of isolation
  • Positive well-being

Encourage our loved ones to stay active and participate in enjoyable activities together. It’s a powerful way to support them on their journey and make each day more meaningful.

Effective communication techniques and innovative therapies can significantly enhance the lives of seniors with dementia.

Caregivers can foster meaningful connections and reduce distress by implementing person-centered approaches, engaging in reminiscence therapy, and utilizing multisensory stimulation.

Remember, each person with dementia is unique. Tailor the approach to their individual needs and consult with healthcare professionals to develop a comprehensive care plan. These practices empower and support individuals living with dementia on this challenging journey.

Personal Care Homes vs. Assisted Living Facilities: Understanding the Key Differences

When searching for the right senior living community for your loved one, it’s essential to understand the differences between a personal care home and an assisted living facility. While both options provide support and care for seniors, some distinctions can make one a better fit for your family member’s needs.

Level of Care: Tailored Support in Personal Care Homes

The primary difference between assisted living communities and personal care homes in Georgia lies in the level of care provided. Many seniors require assistance in only a few aspects of their lives, making personal care homes an ideal choice. These homes offer tailored support, ensuring that each resident receives the help they need while maintaining independence.

In contrast, assisted living facilities typically provide a more comprehensive range of services, which might be more than necessary for some seniors. By focusing on individual needs, personal care homes can deliver personalized attention and support that promotes overall well-being.

Cost-Effectiveness: A Reasonable Option

Cost is another significant factor to consider when comparing personal care homes and assisted living facilities. Personal care homes can be a more cost-effective option for families, as they provide the necessary assistance without the added expense of extensive services that may not be required.

By offering a more targeted approach to care, personal care homes can help seniors maintain their quality of life without placing undue financial strain on families.

Social Engagement: A Vibrant and Involved Community

Personal care homes often strongly emphasize creating a social and engaged environment for residents. This focus on community involvement allows seniors to forge meaningful connections with their peers, participate in activities they enjoy, and maintain an active lifestyle.

While assisted living facilities also offer various activities and programs, personal care homes tend to create a more intimate setting that encourages residents to engage with one another and form lasting friendships.

Making the Right Choice for Your Loved One

When choosing between a personal care home and an assisted living facility, it’s essential to consider your loved one’s unique needs and preferences. Personal care homes can be an excellent option for seniors who require assistance in specific areas of their lives, offering cost-effective and tailored support in a social and engaged environment.

Take the time to research and visit various senior living communities to find the perfect fit for your family member and ensure they receive the care and attention they deserve.

On Saturday, May 21st Ray had a big birthday bash with his family. The community staff provided root beer floats because Ray loves root beer!

It is safe to say that Ray had a very memorable 100th birthday. He was even featured on the local Patch site and Atlanta Senior Life!

Pegasus Senior Living Takes Food Seriously

Senior living dining service is a time for residents to receive the nourishment that inspires them to participate in daily physical and social activities. Culinary teams across the country provide locally sourced meals to older adults in our communities every day.

Food service in our senior living locations includes fresh ingredients like:

  • California avocados
  • Georgia peaches
  • Texas pecans
  • Washington sweet Rainier cherries
  • Louisiana okra

Dining Service Directors from many of our communities recently gathered for a conference in Texas. We had a lot of fun competing, discussing food service management, and bonding as a team.

The two-day event included product demonstrations, vendor meetings, and specialized food service training for long-term care. Director of Memory Care Julie Shroyer gave an inspiring presentation about serving seniors living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Members from the leadership team received the sweetest treat by acting as the judging panel for the mystery basket cooking competition. The taste was not the only measure of the judging.

Points were awarded for:

  • Following proper safety and sanitation processes
  • The design of the recipes and their ease of being prepared by other kitchens
  • Creativity, presentation, and execution

The meal that took home first place honors came from a group of chefs whose mystery box ingredient was chicken. Congratulations to our winning team:

What is good nutrition for seniors?

Body metabolism slows down as we age. The National Library of Medicine recommends that older adults eat foods “that give you lots of nutrients without a lot of extra calories.” Food is the key to maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding preventable disease.

Proper nutrition can help seniors stay independent and avoid extra pills and supplements. In addition to eating right, drinking plenty of water can prevent dehydration and regulate bodily function.

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating a variety of fresh produce is excellent for senior health. The more colors and types, the better! Consuming a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables can help:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower digestive problems
  • Reduce heart disease
  • Reduce the risk of stroke
  • Reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Reduce the risk of certain types of cancer

Harvested foods are not just healthy snacks. Seniors should feature these foods in every meal as a part of a balanced diet.

Whole Grains

Many of the same benefits listed above also come from whole grains. Seniors should avoid the refined carbohydrates and super processed grains found in white bread, pasta, sugary cereals, and flavored yogurt.

Refining whole grains improves shelf-life but sacrifices valuable nutrients like fiber, iron, and B vitamins. Instead, older adults will want to opt for higher-quality ingredients like:

  • Oatmeal
  • Quinoa
  • Beans and other legumes
  • Brown rice

Dairy

Dairy is an essential food for calcium and vitamin D intake. Strengthening bones and decreasing the risk of osteoporosis are two of the main benefits. One cup of milk equals 300mg of the recommended 1200mg of calcium people over 50 require. Yogurt and cheese are great ways to round out dairy intake.

People who are lactose intolerant can also get their calcium from fortified orange juice, canned fish, leafy greens, and milk alternatives like soy and rice beverages.

Protein

Lean protein allows seniors to continue a healthy food journey. While foods like fish, poultry, and eggs are the common thought of protein-rich foods, there are several non-animal products older adults can benefit from:

  • Cooked beans
  • Peanut butter
  • Nuts or seeds

Fish like salmon and tuna are also great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. They are excellent respiratory and immune systems supporters. Adults over 60 can benefit from five to seven ounces of protein a day.

Food Service at Pegasus Senior Living

The dining rooms in our communities are alive with vibrant conversation and resident satisfaction. Our culinary teams create a dining experience just like receiving a home-cooked meal.

Pegasus Senior Living | Cooks working together to plate food

Nutrition is one more aspect of the senior living experience. Our culinary teams are vital members of creating a holistic approach to senior care. Part of personalized care and support is ensuring seniors receive food that benefits their needs.

Our passion is to provide a menu with familiar favorites and daily specials prepared with locally sourced ingredients. We also love when residents are kind enough to share their favorite recipes.

Independent living residents have the choice to continue cooking meals for themselves in their homes but are welcome to join us in the dining room. Assisted living and memory care residents receive three meals a day. Our regularly occurring special events are when culinary teams showcase their sweetest treats and grill skills.

People like Chef Joe creating food experiences make the dining program in our senior living communities so unique. Pegasus Senior Living would like to thank all of the Dining Service Directors who participated in our bonding and learning experience. We can’t wait for residents to taste the new specials.

Dr. Sandra Petersen of Pegasus continues her hard work leading medical teams

Dr. Sandra Petersen is our medical expert at Pegasus. She’s practiced expert medical care for our residents and written numerous studies on memory care.

Pegasus Senior Living | Dr. Sandra Petersen
Thanks to her hard work, the Pegasus medical team has ample stores of masks, sanitation tools, and vaccines to continue ensuring the safety of our residents.

How many people need the vaccine to reach herd immunity?

COVID-19 is still new to medicine and research. Much of its impact is still unknown. The CDC remains uncertain of the vaccine’s total impact on herd immunity in the US.

What is herd immunity?

The CDC determines herd immunity when enough people are simultaneously immune to a virus to prevent it from spreading. The number of people needed to reach herd immunity depends on the virus, population size, and vaccine accessibility.

How long until we reach herd immunity for COVID-19?

The short answer is: we don’t know. With the vaccine clinics scheduled in-house via our partnership with CVS, many folks are wondering when we’ll be through the pandemic. The CDC is monitoring the vaccine roll-out carefully, but much is still unknown about the virus’s response and how long the immunity lasts.

Experts do not yet know what percentage of people would need to get vaccinated to achieve herd immunity to COVID-19.

Are you immune to COVID-19 after you’ve had it?

Temporarily, yes.

Your immune system has a kind of memory when it comes to fighting off viruses it’s encountered before. This is what the CDC calls “natural immunity.”

That’s why, after getting chickenpox, it’s extremely unlikely you’ll get it again — your immune system remembers how to beat it.

Vaccinations make you artificially immune to a virus. Your body doesn’t distinguish between artificial or natural immunity, and, when enough people become immune, the virus struggles to survive and dies off. That’s how scientists eradicated smallpox in the US. Doctors administered the vaccine up until 1972 when the population reached herd immunity.

How long does immunity last?

It’s a common myth that immunity is permanent — it’s not. Our immune system protects us from most of the illnesses it’s fought off before, but virus mutations can still compromise our immune system. Changes in our health and age can also weaken our immune response.

The CDC continues to study the long-term efficacy of the vaccine. The novelty of the virus and its vaccine can’t account for real-world variables without more folks getting the vaccine.

We won’t know how long immunity lasts after vaccination until we have more data on how well COVID-19 vaccines work in real-world conditions.

Folks with natural immunity — folks previously infected — are unlikely to be reinfected “in the 90 days after the first infection,” according to the CDC. It’s important to remember that this number is general and varies from person to person.

Do I need a vaccine if I’ve already gotten COVID-19?

The CDC recommends that everyone get the vaccine who is able. While your immune system may have developed antibodies to COVID-19, natural immunity is not permanent. You can still be reinfected and experts are already discovering new strands of the virus around the world.

Both natural immunity and vaccine-induced immunity are important aspects of COVID-19 that experts are working to learn more about, and CDC will keep the public informed as new evidence becomes available.

Am I safe to be around others if I have immunity?

COVID-19 impacts everyone differently and immunity isn’t guaranteed or permanent even with the vaccine. It’s vital to continue practicing safety mitigations until we reach herd immunity.

COVID-19 Safety Measures
Physical Care Emotional Care
Wear a mask Take walks
Wash your hands Call or video-chat with loved ones
Social distance Keep healthy sleep and food habits
Get vaccinated Reach out for support

We have several vaccines for COVID-19 available, but we need to remember that access and distribution are still limited. Not everyone can get the vaccine right now, so we’re still learning information on its impact. Dr. Petersen continues to monitor the science and news for COVID-19 as it develops.

Get your vaccine when you can and continue to practice safety protocols afterward. This information will change as we learn more, so monitor the CDC for developments. You can read helpful safety tips on our blog and check our vaccine schedule on our COVID-19 Information page.

The Latest Medical Advancement Allows Us to Further Protect Our Residents and Staff

With the approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine this week, Pegasus is taking the steps necessary to ensure a smooth process when it comes to all of their residents and team members receiving COVID-19 vaccinations.

Pegasus Senior Living | Woman Flexing in Mask
We are overjoyed to know that we can take extra steps to keep our community strong!

How will the vaccines be distributed?

Although vaccinations will be distributed on a state level, up to 45 states are planning on implementing the recommended CDC protocols that prioritize those living in long-term care communities, which is typically an umbrella term that includes senior living communities.

Our new partnership with OmniCare-CVS

Pegasus will be partnering with Omnicare-CVS to schedule clinics and will be prepared to administer the vaccine to its residents once distribution dates are available.

“It is still a bit early to tell exact dates regarding when our residents and team members will be receiving the vaccinations,” said Justin Wray, VP of Operations for Pegasus. “However, our teams are prepared and ready with our CVS partnership to administer the vaccines as soon as possible.”

What are Pegasus associates doing to help?

As a way to encourage employees to take the vaccine, Pegasus is providing educational materials detailing the benefits and research behind the vaccine.

“Tens of thousands of brave, healthy people around the world agreed to participate in the vaccine clinical trials,” said Dr. Sandra Petersen, Health and Wellness Consultant for Pegasus. “Results were over 90% effective compared to people who didn’t participate. That’s phenomenal when compared to the flu vaccine, which is only 44% effective. Taking this vaccine will honor their participation to follow—and keep us from getting sick.”

Dr. Petersen has been leading the way for Pegasus by advising and managing the company’s healthcare teams since the start of the pandemic.

“If we all tackle this together, we can move past this with a better chance to return back to normal. COVID has impacted too many already. Let’s each do our part to slow this virus,” she added.

What additional measures have we taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Since March 2020 when restrictions began due to the pandemic, Pegasus has been one of the top senior living operators implementing proactive measures and keeping families informed with continuous communication and updates. The company created a COVID webpage with frequent necessary updates as well as emails and calls to families. In addition, Pegasus communities would update families with photos and videos on their Facebook pages of residents participating in socially distanced activities or themed events.

Pegasus associates congratulate our resident during her birthday celebration.

With holidays like Easter, Mother’s Day, and Thanksgiving passing by, Pegasus team members at the community level made sure residents still felt the holiday spirit and saw families at a distance with drive-by parades, window visits, holiday events, and teaching residents how to use technology to FaceTime or Zoom their loved ones.

If you are not sure how to use video-calling software, we can help!

From Loneliness to Companionship

If you remain COVID-free and follow our safety precautions, you will now be able to visit your loved ones in most Pegasus communities.

What happens when you cannot visit your senior family member or friend?

Even with the help of virtual visits and social media, many of our residents have missed their loved ones throughout the pandemic. However, we are doing all we can to reunite you with your family member. If you are in a state where visits are not allowed quite yet, we will continue keeping you apprised of what your loved ones are up to and monitor state guidelines.

What Else Has Pegasus Done to Help throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic’s emergence, our entire Pegasus team has succeeded in their efforts to make their communities as secure and engaging as possible. Its trained associates well-educated on COVID-19 protocols and procedures have organized unique, socially-distanced activities. These include but are not limited to art classes at The Oaks at Inglewood, decade-themed dance parties at Broadway Mesa Village, picnics at The Courtyards at Belleview, and interactive digital activities at every community.

How Often Are Residents Visited?

With the information it had collected about ten years before the pandemic, the National Survey of Residential Care Facilities measured how often each of their participants received visitors over one month. The vast majority of them of them had interacted with at least one person from outside of the facility, as you can see from the table below:

We encourage you to visit our community to bring a sense of normalcy back into all of our lives, and especially our seniors’.

Which States Have Opened Senior Living Facilities and Which Ones Haven’t?

Most states–aside from Alabama, New York, and Nevada–recently began allowing people to visit senior living communities and nursing homes in-person. We will continue to monitor what  state governors advise, act accordingly, and will open our communities to family visits as soon as we can and when it is safe in Alabama, New York, and Nevada.

What Is Written in State Guidelines?

Visitation rules vary by state. As one example, Pegasus communities in Texas now accept up to two family members or friends per resident who visit one at a time. In his interview with KHOU 11 News Houston, Pegasus Senior Vice President of Operations Justin Wray expressed his excitement about the news, but also assured everyone that his communities will continue doing everything they can to keep residents as healthy as possible.

Visitors are required to have tested negative for COVID-19 within two weeks of visiting and should comply with social distancing guidelines while wearing personal protective equipment.

How Can I Get More Information About My Specific State’s Response to COVID-19?

Both visitors and residents are thrilled to see each others’ smiles in person once again. Do you want to see your loved one at one of our Independent Living, Assisted Living, or Memory Care communities? We provide updates about state guidelines on our Facebook pages–one for Pegasus and others for each community.

At Pegasus, our experts in senior living have exceeded all expectations by skillfully balancing our residents’ physical and emotional health. Because we also value the individual and interactive learning experiences of their loved ones, we offer personalized discussions about the security of visitation.

Whether or not your state allows visits, you may also speak with one of our associates or visit the American Association of Retired Persons’ website to stay up-to-date on all the details of its ever-changing guidelines.
