Life Enrichment Director: Teresa Hadley

Once upon a time, there was a remarkable woman named Teresa Hadley at Broadway Mesa Village, nestled in the heart of Mesa, Arizona. She held the title of Life Enrichment Director, a role she embraced with unwavering dedication for years. Broadway Mesa Village was not just an assisted living and memory care community but a place where seniors found their second home. Teresa is the magic behind it all.

How Decorating a Senior Living Apartment Simply Takes Care and Heart

Teresa is not your ordinary Life Enrichment Director; she is a true ‘celebration professional.’ Every holiday, birthday, event, or “just because” moment is transformed into an unforgettable experience under her capable hands. She is also a painter. Her passion for residents shines brightly in every stroke of her brush.

Among all the special occasions, birthdays are something truly extraordinary at Broadway Mesa Village. Teresa’s artistic talents shone here like nowhere else. Each resident’s door is transformed with a one-of-a-kind birthday painting created by Teresa herself. The anticipation among the residents is palpable as they wonder what their unique banner will look like each year. Teresa perfected the art of decorating a senior living apartment with love!

Decorating for Social Events, Too!

But Teresa’s creativity doesn’t stop at paintings. She uses her artistic talents during events to craft extraordinary experiences for the residents.

For a car show, Teresa painted unique rock trophies that would be awarded in categories like:

  • “Car most likely to impress your In-laws”
  • “Prom date car”
  • “Car you’d most likely ride through Arizona in”
  • “Car most likely to take on a midnight drive”

There were six coveted rock trophies and 13 unusual certificates up for grabs, all adorned with her artistic touch.

As you read this, you might wonder, “How can I meet Teresa and witness firsthand the transformation of seniors’ lives through her unique approach?” Well, it’s quite simple. We invite you to schedule a tour at Broadway Mesa Village. Meet Teresa, the maestro behind the scenes, and see how she brings a touch of magic every day to the lives of our beloved seniors.

A Heartwarming Message with Baked Goods

Let’s travel back to 2019 when Teresa shared a heartwarming story. In those early days of her adventure at Broadway Mesa Village, she wondered how she could make residents feel more at home.

She decided to bake homemade cinnamon rolls from scratch every first Friday of the month. The heavenly aroma that filled the building brought back cherished memories for many. Residents would say, “It smells just like when I’d come home from school, and my mother would be baking.”

These baking sessions became more than just a culinary delight; they became opportunities to forge special connections. Teresa would roll out the dough, sprinkle generous helpings of cinnamon and brown sugar, and roll it into delicious cinnamon rolls. As the rolls baked to a perfect golden brown, she would carefully place them on platters and deliver them to each apartment, ensuring every resident received fresh-baked goodness.

Once, when Teresa felt overwhelmed with her responsibilities, she wondered if the residents would miss her homemade rolls. That week, as one of their dear friends reached the end of her journey on this earth, Teresa had a profound encounter. She visited the friend when she was coherent but frail. The friend struggled to open her eyes but managed to ask Teresa, “What day is it?” With a gentle smile, Teresa replied, “It’s Friday.”

The friend’s eyes widened with a hint of excitement as she asked, “Teresa, did you bring me a roll?” In that simple request, the significance of Teresa’s efforts became crystal clear. Even in her final moments, the taste of those homemade rolls brought comfort and joy.

Teresa’s story reminds us that the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference in someone’s life. She and her team at Broadway Mesa Village are going above and beyond each day, embodying the spirit of care and compassion that defines the community.

So, if you ever doubt whether your efforts matter, remember Teresa and the joy she brings through her homemade rolls, paintings, and unwavering dedication. Keep giving of yourself, keep up the good work, and know that it indeed makes a world of difference. Broadway Mesa Village and Teresa Hadley are living proof of that.

Day One: Dancing Like There’s No Tomorrow

On August 31, 2023, family, friends, residents, and team members gathered at Broadway Mesa Village to wish Vivian a happy birthday. The guests danced to live music, enjoyed special treats, and the guest of honor opened some of the 1,700+ birthday cards she had received.

Day Two: A Community Parade

Vivian’s senior birthday continued outdoors the next day with a parade and greetings from the City of Mesa Firefighters and local government officials. Sitting on a comfortable couch and wearing a rhinestone crown, she watched the parade and received her visitors with a smile. Vivian was presented with gift baskets, flowers, and one-on-one time with the local fire chief and police department representatives. She was thrilled to be the focus of attention that day and received plenty of compliments and hugs.

Day Three: A Motorcycle Ride

On September 2, Vivian was seen on her feet, waving to members of the Christian Motorcycle Association as they drove by Broadway Mesa Village’s entrance with their lights flashing. After the men and women participating in this procession parked, they greeted Vivian with hugs and a card. The group also prayed together and when that ended, the guest of honor asked for a motorcycle ride; she was given a helmet and helped onto the seat. Vivian was all smiles as her driver revved the engine and took her for a spin – she even mentioned her “helmet hair” afterward!

Christian Motorcycle Association wishes Vivian a Happy 105th

Getting into college, buying a home, and understanding how to pay your taxes are all difficult tasks to accomplish alone. Setting yourself up for life after retirement should be easy, but it’s hard to juggle budgets when the pricing structure of senior living is not advertised in big, bold letters.

If you’re looking for independent or assisted living and want to know the cost, it helps to know what you’re paying for.

With the recent announcement of cost of living adjustments in Social Security benefits, many seniors are starting to take a second look at the possibilities of independent living, assisted living, or memory care fitting into their budgets. The 5.9 percent increase is sure to help your decision.

Are senior living communities private pay?

Just like renting an apartment or staying in a hotel, you get to choose where you want to spend your money. The amenities provided, the location, the perks — all influence your choice, and paying for these essential services is up to you. Pegasus Senior Living communities are private pay and can cater to any lifestyle.

What level of senior living is best for me?

Pegasus Senior Living communities focus on:

Some communities, like South Hill Village in Spokane, Washington, offer all three options. This structure makes it easier to age in place and never hassle with moving again.

Ridgmar Place in Fort Worth, Texas is dedicated to active independent living and includes amenities such as an indoor pool. Understanding what you want now or may need in the future can increase your financial stability.

In general, your monthly costs will increase with the care services needed. Independent living is excellent for retirees who would like to stay active and involved in socializing. In assisted living, you receive help where it is required so you can maintain an independent lifestyle. For people experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia, memory care is a way to continue living a life of purpose and dignity.

What are you paying for in senior living?

Hospitality services to make life easy and health care for peace of mind, such as:

Amenities

• Activity programs
• Multiple chef-inspired meals a day
• Paid utilities
• Wi-Fi, cable, and phone included

Services

• Housekeeping
• Laundry
• Transportation
• Maintenance

Care

• Licensed nurse
• Ongoing monitoring of residents’ health
• On-site physical, occupational, and speech therapy

Does Medicare pay for assisted living?

No.

You can receive some services while living in an assisted living or skilled nursing facility that Medicare may pay a portion of, but it will not cover the cost of residency. However, long-term care insurance, social security, and VA benefits can help pay for more services.

North Point Village in Spokane offers assisted living and memory care services. Washington Veterans benefits include coverage for spouses and can be spent on activities of daily living, a service we provide.

What is a base rate?

Like staying in a hotel, the base rate is the daily cost breakdown. Depending on the size of your apartment, the base rate is between $90-$150 a day. Pegasus communities offer various apartment layouts, from studios to two-bedroom apartments.

What does the base rate include?

  • Three meals a day and snacks prepared by our culinary team using seasonal ingredients that are locally sourced
  • Access to the wellness center and exercise classes
  • Community transportation to appointments, excursions, and shopping
  • Housekeeping, linen service, and maintenance
  • Access to the activities calendar
  • Special events and parties your community hosts
  • Utilities paid

What is the price for care services?

Lower than you would think. Care services at our communities are based on an hourly rate. Because each person needs different services, there are six levels of care. Our senior living experts determine which level of care is best for you or your loved one. $10-$15 a day provides:

  • Licensed and registered nurses
  • Medication management
  • Dressing services
  • Bathing services
  • Assistance with dining needs
  • Behavior tracking and management
  • Incontinence care/management
  • Secure environment for individuals with memory loss
  • Incontinence care/management
  • Diabetic care and sliding scale insulin management (in select communities)
  • Personal check-ins throughout the day
  • On-site physical, occupational, and speech therapy

*This is not a comprehensive list of all Pegasus community offerings. Services vary by location; find one near you for options.

What’s the difference between hospitality and health care?

Hospitality and health care are the two types of pricing services in senior living. Hospitality, like a hotel, implies the amenities to which you will enjoy full access. Health care is a sliding scale cost depending on your needs.

At Glenwood Village of Overland Park in Kansas, a person who only needs diabetic care will pay less than the person who needs memory care and assistance with daily living activities. While everyone has the same access to activities and meals, care services are personalized just for you.

How does assisted living or memory care compare to the cost of living at home?

The Genworth Cost of Care Survey is a fantastic resource for comparing costs of senior living across the country. Comparing state by state, you may find care is more cost-effective in a location closer to friends or family.

States Below National Cost AveragePegasus Community
AlabamaBridgewood Gardens

Broadway Mesa Village
Sun City West Assisted Living
Tucson Place at Ventana Canyon

GeorgiaDunwoody Place
NevadaThe Seasons of Reno
Texas

Parmer Woods at North Austin
Ridgmar Place
The Farrington at Tanglewood
Town Village Crossing

It’s a bit of homework, but adding up your monthly budget and comparing it to a month’s cost in assisted living can be surprising.

Think of the things that factor into the cost of living at a Pegasus community:

  • Meals
  • Transportation
  • Housekeeping
  • Linen service
  • Landscaping
  • Utilities
  • Entertainment
  • Exercise and activities
  • Basic health monitoring

Think of the things you do not need to pay for in assisted living:

  • Property tax
  • Home repairs
  • Home remodels
  • Surprise utility bills

Is the cost of senior living worth it?

You’ll have access to modern amenities in spacious and accessible apartments at Pegasus Senior Living communities. If you need care now or require it in the future, all of those options will be available to you.

The complete activities calendar we keep means there’s never a dull moment. Join in on a wellness program, live concert, new hobby, or simply relax outside in the shade — the choice is yours. We’re known for our good times, and Greenhaven Place in Sacramento even made the local news for theirs.

What is downsizing for seniors?

Preparing for your future.

Everyone can benefit from a bit of downsizing. Over the years we accumulate so many useful things as well as clutter. Letting go of things we’ve acquired seems like an especially daunting process for seniors, but it can be very simple, therapeutic, and rewarding. A big part of senior living is enjoying peace of mind and having less stuff will give you exactly that.

When should I start downsizing in my home?

Start early and start small.

Downsizing is an easy task if you start chipping away at unwanted things little by little. Don’t start with big projects that may discourage you from continuing.

Pegasus Senior Living | Seniors downsizing
Getting rid of a few things a week like duplicate kitchen utensils and pans are a great place to start.

Consider rooms that you won’t have at your new residence and find creative ways to eliminate their clutter. Turning your home office into one desk’s worth of essentials or organizing tools into one toolbox makes for a smooth transition.

Garages and attics usually require the most attention. Holiday decorations, temporary hobby items and things that just don’t fit anywhere else usually end up here. Make a goal to pack what you need over a few weeks or months from those areas. Whatever’s left over can be sold, donated or discarded. Have a plan for where items will go and avoid “maybe” piles.

Steps to downsizing alone or with loved ones:

  • Make three piles: Keep, donate and garbage
  • Keep an inventory to track your progress
  • Take pictures or notes of how you like things set-up
  • Take your time and reminisce if you need to
  • Organize room by room and don’t overwhelm yourself

What kind of things will I need to bring to my new senior living community?

We encourage you to bring your hobbies, culture and accomplishments to your new home. The things that will bring you joy and meet basic needs are important to have. At Pegasus Senior Living, we offer living spaces from spacious studios to two-bedroom apartments. We accommodate independent living, assisted living, enhanced assisted living, personal care homes, respite care and memory care.

What are my options for downsizing?

It can be a memorable experience to have friends or family members participate in downsizing. AARP has fantastic resources on companies that specialize in downsizing as well.

Other ways to declutter are:

  • Start giving away heirloom items
  • Digitize photos and negatives
  • Scan important documents and shred the rest
  • Donate to a local charity who offers pick-up service
  • Have a yard sale
  • Sell items online or in consignment shops

Pegasus Communities Cater to the Specialized Needs of Seniors with Memory Loss

At Pegasus Senior Living, we offer memory care neighborhoods that are ideal living spaces for seniors with a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s. We know that the right setting is essential for our memory care residents to thrive.

Supported by the unique, research-backed programming of our Connections memory care program, our memory care apartments are comfortable spaces that seniors can make their own. If you’re looking for a community where your loved one can live with dignity, Pegasus is ready to welcome you.

What Are Some Benefits of Our Memory Care Apartments?

Pegasus Senior Living’s memory care neighborhoods are well-equipped to let your loved one live a fulfilling life.

Our memory care apartments offer:

  • A social environment – With comfortable common areas and a variety of activities, our communities are always finding new ways for our residents to connect.
  • Outdoor time– Pegasus has locations across the United States, and we help our seniors safely enjoy the natural beauty of their area.
  • A personal touch – Our communities have small resident-to-associate ratios, which allows us to provide your loved one with attentive, personalized care.
  • Constant connection – Our associates make it a point to build and foster strong relationships with the people in our residents’ lives, whether it’s family members or other caregiving partners.

What Sets the Connections Memory Care Program Apart?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 6.2 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2021. When seeking out a senior living community, it’s essential to find a provider with the right resources and experience.

As comfortable spaces for rest and rejuvenation, Pegasus Senior Living memory care apartments are extremely well-suited to the needs of seniors with memory loss. Within our communities, they offer plenty of private space while also providing easy access to the common areas of the neighborhood.
