Prioritizing the Newest Guidelines for Seniors and COVID-19

The health and well-being of our residents are paramount at Pegasus Senior Living. It’s a commitment that we take to heart daily. It’s especially at the forefront of our minds with flu season beginning and the threat of new COVID-19 variants.

According to a recent article, the Biden administration plans to urge all Americans to get a COVID-19 booster shot this autumn to counter a new wave of infections. Our communities will be following the vaccination guidelines for senior citizens and COVID-19.

Our senior living communities take a proactive approach to health and wellness. We want to echo this message and encourage residents and their families to stay vigilant and protect their health. We are committed to health care for seniors.

Understanding New COVID-19 Variants: What They Mean for Older Adults

Recent reports from global health organizations have highlighted the emergence of new COVID-19 variants.

One such variant is BA.2.86, a highly mutated lineage of the virus that distinguishes itself from the currently dominant XBB.1.5 variant with 36 unique alterations.

Despite these mutations, there is currently no evidence to suggest that BA.2.86 spreads faster or causes more severe illness than previous versions of the virus.

However, it’s important to remember that information about this new variant is still coming to light, and we must stay informed and vigilant.

The BA.2.86 variant has been detected in six cases across four countries since late July, including in:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Israel
  • Denmark

While it differs structurally from earlier variants targeted by current vaccines, scientists are working tirelessly to analyze its potential impact on public health.

With the emergence of BA.2.86, the world has seen a rise in infections and hospitalizations due to the EG.5 “Eris” subvariant.

This variant has been responsible for more cases in recent months. Still, it’s reassuring to note that the COVID-19 vaccine continues to defend against illness and death, including against the Eris variant.

This underscores the importance of getting vaccinated and staying up-to-date with recommended booster shots. Updated boosters are currently being developed to target the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.512.

Preliminary trial data suggests promising results from the latest version of the Moderna vaccine against Eris and a related variant called Fornax. Pfizer’s updated COVID-19 shot has also shown neutralizing activity against the Eris subvariant in a study conducted on mice.

Understanding these evolving dynamics of COVID-19 can feel overwhelming for older adults and their families. Our Pegasus Senior Living Health and Wellness team, led by Dr. Sandra Petersen, is committed to staying ahead of these developments and implementing necessary measures to protect our residents.

We encourage everyone to:

  • Follow health guidelines
  • Keep up with vaccinations and boosters as recommended
  • Remain vigilant

Together, we can navigate this complex landscape and continue fostering healthy, vibrant lives in our senior living communities.

Staying Vigilant to Senior COVID-19 Guidelines

COVID-19 has underscored the importance of staying vigilant when it comes to our health. As we navigate a season that now includes three bugs, it’s crucial to remain informed of the latest health advisories and recommendations.

The proposed COVID-19 boosters are designed to enhance the effectiveness of the initial vaccine doses, providing additional protection against emerging virus variants.

Like the annual flu shot, this booster is another tool in our arsenal to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

How Pegasus Communities Can Help

In Pegasus Senior Living communities, we are committed to supporting our residents in maintaining their health. We consistently monitor updates from health authorities and adapt our protocols accordingly to ensure the health and well-being of all community members.

We understand that getting to vaccination appointments can challenge some residents. That’s why we’re here to help coordinate transportation and assist with scheduling these essential appointments.

Many of our communities have participated in on-site vaccination programs since 2020.

Our team members work tirelessly to create a nurturing environment that prioritizes the health of residents. From nutritious meal planning to organizing engaging mental and physical activities, we aim to support the overall wellness of our community members.

A Shared Responsibility

Protecting the health of residents is a shared responsibility. It involves our dedicated team members, the residents, and their families. By staying informed, following recommended guidelines, and getting the necessary vaccinations, we can all contribute to a healthier community.

Pegasus remains steadfast in our commitment to the well-being of residents. We will continue prioritizing their health, providing the most current information, and offering the support needed to navigate flu season.

Whether it’s a mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, or wife, women have played an essential role in shaping our lives and communities. Many seniors also have fond memories of the strong and courageous women who have inspired and supported them throughout their lives. These women may have been family members, caregivers, teachers, or mentors who have helped shape the person they are today.

In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, Pegasus Senior Living would like to celebrate and share the story of Ms. Gladys P., a beloved resident at The Renaissance of Florence.

Gladys P.’s Story

Gladys moved into The Renaissance of Florence from her home on August 16, 2022. Ms. P.’s husband was hospitalized at the time, and he was then transferred to an area skilled nursing facility. Her family members were concerned about her being alone, and so was she. Gladys had visited our community several times to visit with church members over the years, and she knew this was where she wanted to be.

Soon after she moved in, her husband, unfortunately, passed away. Ms. P. shared that team members’ and residents’ support and kindness during this emotional and challenging time was invaluable.

Ms. P. indicated that she has always been received with warmth, care, and compassion since living in our community. She absolutely loves our gardens and beautiful flowers. Ms. P. feels that she has significantly benefited from being around others her own age, participating in activities and outings, and eating nutritious meals. She did say, jokingly, that her love for our macaroni and cheese has led to her gaining weight!

Senior Living Communities Enhance Lives

This season, we are also reflecting on how much senior living communities improve the lives of older adults.

Seniors who live in independent living, assisted living, and memory care communities enjoy a higher quality of life than those who live independently or with a caretaker. They have access to higher care and assistance when needed, which gives them peace of mind.

Pegasus Senior Living communities provide an excellent opportunity for socialization and connection. Seniors who live in assisted living communities often form close friendships with their fellow residents.

We cannot be more grateful for Dr. Sandra Petersen and her Connections program for memory care. Congratulations to our recent Connections Academy graduates from across the county. Now more families can find personalized care services for their loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

This Thanksgiving, we are extra grateful for how our communities enhance seniors’ lives.

Grateful For New Residents

We have a lot to be thankful for at Pegasus Senior Living! From wonderful residents to our talented team members, we truly are blessed.

Join us in time for the next festive celebration. Find a Pegasus Senior Living community near you and arrange a tour. Happy holidays!

The “LTC Heroes Podcast” recently caught up with our CEO to discuss:

  • The importance of creating an employee-centric culture and retaining staff
  • Changing the public perception of memory care and its immense benefits.
  • Advice on how people can get involved in senior living operations
  • The similarities between ziplining through the bush of New Zealand and operating a senior living community

Creating Culture in Senior Living

An employee-centric culture is one where employees feel like valued team members and are motivated to do their best work. A study by Glassdoor found that 53 percent of employees would stay at a job longer if they felt like they were part of a supportive community.

Under Hollister’s leadership, Pegasus is recognized as a certified Great Place to Work. Senior living is a people industry. Having an employee-centered culture is vital.

“COVID changed the world,” Hollister says. “This isn’t a telecommute job. The pendulum has swung. They [employees] have the power now, and they have to connect to the mission.”

Assisted living and memory care are not businesses that can shut down for a day. Having people that can take care of older adults is a day-in-day-out job. Some of the ways Pegasus communities are retaining team members include:

  • Investing in an employee benefits package
  • Increased wages by 20-30 percent
  • Creating a culture of celebration
  • At-home orientation training

Creating an employee-centric culture should be a top priority for any senior living community because it has improved resident satisfaction, higher staff retention rates, and increased operational efficiency. Giving employees a reason to connect to “the why” of the business is critical.

Educating the Public About Memory Care

Memory care is a different caregiving approach specialized for those living with dementia. Team members who do not know the culture can be a problem in memory care because it can be challenging to understand the needs of the residents.

A higher turnover rate in specialized care is unfair to residents and their families because they constantly have to adjust to new caregivers. With people in memory care who understand our signature program, Connections can help create a more nurturing environment for residents.

“We’re very fortunate to have Dr. Sandra Petersen, who’s a physician and noted memory care expert,” says Hollister. “We have the theory of neuroplasticity. If you move, connect, and learn – in that order, you can get people to rebuild neural networks and live. And on some levels improve. That’s a bold claim, but we think it can slow the progression.”

Hollister stresses the importance of educating the public on the benefits of memory care as an industry.

Memory care is scary for many people, and it causes tremendous stress for seniors and their families. Older adults who need memory care will be happier living in the moment. Connections is a program doing precisely that.

Pizza and The Great Outdoors

Hollister has been involved in senior living for over 35 years. After much success in his first decade, he moved to New Zealand to reset and connect to his passion for nature.

His ecotourism business drops people off in the bush via zip lines and educates them on the history of the Mauri people and how to navigate an unfamiliar environment.

“It’s an amalgam of senior living. Every community is its own habitat and peculiarities. You have to gauge how to let people make it their own community.”

Hollister rolled up his sleeves as a teenager in the restaurant industry. He resurfaced that determination by investing in a New Zealand pizza shop. All endeavors are about risk management and empowering your people.

“It’s all about making people happy. Senior living is by far the hardest business. There are so many moving parts.”

How can someone get into senior living operations?

“In 1986, a year out of business school, I was interested in real estate and finance,” says Hollister. “This industry has a way of pulling at your heartstrings once you get in it, and I just fell in love with it.”

A career in senior living operations can be very rewarding, but getting started in the industry is not always easy.

One of the best things you can do is to get involved and network with other professionals. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and make friends with people who work in the field. You should also continue your education and strive to be well-rounded.

Operational people who understand the financial world and finance people who understand senior living can be valuable assets to any organization.

However, firsthand experience working in a senior living facility is also essential. Understanding the day-to-day operations will help you develop the skills you need to succeed.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek out mentors who can help you navigate the industry. With hard work and dedication, you can achieve your goals and have a rewarding career in senior living operations.

Paul Steinhoff was a strong mentor to Hollister, who taught him lessons such as:

  • Double-check your work
  • Think critically
  • Don’t force an answer
  • Look at the facts

Finally, the scorching hot months of summer are coming to an end as we head into fall. While most may be focusing their attention on candy apples and pumpkins, we should also be turning our focus to the monumental month that is September and what it stands for. September is Healthy Aging Month, which seniors in particular should pay attention to. Whether we like it or not, every second that passes by, we are aging; which means this is an awareness month that everybody should care about.

For the most part, seniors are at a higher risk for conditions such as disease and negative impacts on overall wellness, which is why we here at Pegasus Senior Living have hand-crafted this list of the best healthy aging habits for seniors. We understand the challenges of putting your health first which is why we are here to help. Healthy Aging Month is all about you!

1. Getting Active

Summer can be a hard time for many reasons. Whether you find yourself struggling with the increased temperatures for one reason or another, we’re glad to say that the seasons are soon changing. With the autumn season comes cooler weather. If you’ve been meaning to get outside and get active, this is your time to shine.

Exercise in any form is important, especially as we age, which is why this is number one on our list. Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily need to get outside to be active. Taking a small walk around your senior living community with a friend or companion is a great place to start. Whether you prefer to stay inside or go outside to soak up some vitamin D is totally up to you.

Regardless of your preferred style, adding some movement to your day can serve to support your health in more ways than one. Between strengthening your muscles, reducing your risk of disease, and helping to loosen up your joints, there are numerous benefits associated with walking. This is why it’s important to incorporate this type of exercise into your everyday routine, in whatever style you choose.

2. Staying Social

Social interaction can come in many different forms. From spending quality time with your family and loved ones that visit you to your friends, these types of activities have no limits. Still, social participation offers many advantages for seniors, some of which you might not have even heard of.

For starters, it helps you build and sustain relationships. If it’s family, you gain the privilege of continuing to enrich your bond. For friends, this helps you learn more, share more, and ultimately, continue growing your relationship with that person.

Next, being social is healthy for your mind and mental health. Oftentimes, we find ourselves sharing a good laugh or engaging in some critical thinking during conversations. These are all good things that your mind needs as you age. This ultimately helps you stay clear of isolation and depression.

Lastly, scientists have found that daily social activity may even help in the prevention of dementia. With way more positives than there are negatives, engaging in social interaction should be at the top of your priority list every day.

3. Monitoring Your Health

Staying ahead of health issues and monitoring your well-being are just as important as exercise. They go hand-in-hand with each other. Taking precautionary measures, especially as you age, is crucial for aging in the healthiest way possible.

Begin with your regular annual appointments. If you haven’t been in a while, give your doctor a call to set up an appointment. Here is a basic list of medical professionals you should regularly check in with:

  • Primary care physician
  • Dentist
  • Optometrist

After visiting each of these health care providers, you’ll have a good plan of action for your health care needs! Healthy aging involves maintenance. It’s a huge part of prevention, especially when it comes to your health. Although most people make a point to schedule an appointment with their primary care doctor, medical professionals like dentists and optometrists tend to fall by the wayside. While it may not seem important to see your dentist and optometrist every year, we can assure you that it is.

As you age, your teeth start to weaken, so staying up to date with your dentist can help make sure those pearly whites stay as strong as you are. Ensuring that you are getting enough Vitamin D can also help with this. Equally as important to protecting your teeth is protecting your vision. All of those childhood memories and beautiful sights you took in throughout your life would not be possible without good eye health.

Unfortunately, the quality of our vision changes as we age, which is why many older adults need special eye care over time. One of the most common is needing progressive lenses as this type of lens offers multiple prescriptions all-in-one and helps address a variety of concerns. If you’re struggling with age-related eye issues like near or far-sightedness, it may be in your best interest to learn about progressive lenses and whether or not you should be wearing them. Give your doctors a call and start your journey to a healthier you today.

4. Participating in a Hobby

While retirement has its many benefits, finding a sense of purpose and seeking community can also be a welcome challenge. If you find this speaks to you, first understand that it’s normal to crave some structure and engagement when life slows down a bit. Participating in your favorite hobbies might be the answer you are looking for.

For starters, they’re enjoyable and can give you something to look forward to. Next, they can provide you with a sense of community and open you up to fresh experiences. And lastly, they can reduce stress and give you a newfound sense of purpose. Residents at Pegasus Senior Living communities enjoy a wide variety of monthly classes, clubs, outings, parties, and events. There is truly something for every interest. Do some research on activities offered at a community near you, or brainstorm new hobbies in general. You never know what new endeavor will spark creativity and joy!

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for updated boosters for new variants of COVID-19. These formulas of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for individuals 12 years of age and older.

The updated boosters target both the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 and omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5. The aim of the COVID-19 vaccine campaign is to generate the strongest and broadest immunity against the virus.

Pegasus Senior Living spoke with their Health and Wellness Director, Dr. Sandra Petersen, to get the latest information. Discover why the booster is the best way for older adults to protect themselves against the ongoing pandemic.

The Importance of a COVID-19 Booster Shot

The health of Pegasus Senior Living residents and team members is always our top priority. We are strongly encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The initial vaccine is essential. It’s equally important to get a booster shot to protect against all virus variants.

Although the initial vaccine is effective, data suggests a booster shot may be necessary to generate the strongest and broadest immunity against all variants of COVID-19.

A bivalent booster focused on the original COVID-19 strain can help accomplish this goal. Any changes to this strategy would require clinical testing. However, that’s nearly impossible since there just aren’t enough adults who haven’t been infected or vaccinated to perform a valid test.

Another unknown is whether the BA.4/BA.5 omicron subvariants will continue to be the dominant viruses. There is always the chance of needing modified vaccines for different variants. It’s similar to the updated influenza vaccines each year.

Follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) weekly updates on omicron variants and subvariants results.

Ensure that you are protected against all variants of the virus by getting a booster shot.

Who should get these updated boosters?

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 bivalent booster dose is authorized as a single booster dose in people ages 12 years and older. The Moderna COVID-19 bivalent booster dose is approved for use as a single booster dose in individuals 18 years of age and older.

Talk to your health care provider about whether or not these bivalent vaccines are right for you. Even with prior vaccination, discussing this with your doctor is best.

What do the EUAs mean?

The EUAs for the updated boosters mean that they can be distributed and administered in the U.S. However, it is important to note that these are not yet licensed vaccines; they are still in the investigational stage. Licensure requires submitting additional data to the FDA for review and approval.

What Are the Benefits of Covid Boosters?

By targeting the original strain of SARS-CoV-2 and omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5, these updated vaccines provide an additional layer of protection against COVID-19. Consider the booster especially important as we continue to see new virus variants emerge.

Pegasus Senior Living: Providing Regular COVID-19 Updates

Our communities are doing their part to help stop the spread of the virus. We were all impacted by it, but seniors are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19.

The FDA’s authorization of these updated boosters is good news for those seeking additional protection against COVID-19. If you fall into the eligible age range, talk to your health care provider about whether or not these vaccines are right for you.

We strongly encourage everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and to get a booster shot as soon as possible. A booster shot can help protect you and everyone else.
