Painter, calligrapher, illustrator, cartoonist, sign designer, sculptor. Make way for Mr. Louis Panagini, Leawood’s jack of all trades when it comes to the visual arts.
It’s safe to say that Louis can make anything out of any object. Since living at Town Village of Leawood off 4400 W 115th St., Louis has produced a lot: a watercolor drawing of the community, little animals using peanuts, various paintings and sculpted apples. Louis’ process involves drying the apples, carving them and then placing googly eyes on them.
Louis’ workshop is also his kitchen. His art supplies are on one side and kitchen utensils are on the other – his daughter Susan makes sure they are labelled appropriately! Louis’ apartment looks like an art studio, filled with paints, brushes and various things to tinker with. His daughter visits him often with scrap tile and linoleum for Louis to cut and paint on.
Louis says he is so happy to have more time to work on his art since living in a retirement community. He’s not wasting time on chores or cooking anymore.
Louis has been an artist his whole life. He started painting watercolors at 17 and when he was older, attended evening classes in calligraphy and anatomy at the Art Students League in New York City. He was recognized for his talents at the University of Minnesota, who selected him to attend the renowned Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China in 1986 and 1990. As a recognized watercolorist at this point, he became an instructor and presenter of his craft for 30 years.
